Rescue and salvage as flooding hits

10 Feb, 2012 04:00 AM
SEVERAL people have been rescued over the past fortnight as floodwaters swept across Central and North West Queensland.

In the weekend following Australia Day, two men swam across flooded channels, a family of six was evacuated, vehicles were swept off roads and more than 100 people were stranded.

The men swam across waters in the Dismal Channel to the Burke and Wills Roadhouse more than 200km from Julia Creek, while the occupants of two vehicles were stranded between McKinlay and Cloncurry.

A Northern Territory vehicle was washed off the road on the Landsborough Highway near the Fulton river, and a truck driver rescued the male driver and took him to Cloncurry.

RACQ NQ Rescue Helicopter went to the aid of two elderly motorists who had been stranded overnight near the Gilliat Channels north-west of Julia Creek.

After arriving on scene and failing to locate the elderly couple, the helicopter returned to Cloncurry for fuel and then departed to search for the missing people.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service also facilitated two swift water rescue officers to join the helicopter rescue.

It was the third floodwater-related incident the helicopter had been requested for in a 24-hour period.

The following day, five vehicles and three road trains were stuck at Nora Creek bridge between McKinlay and Cloncurry.

The road had been closed at Winton to prevent more people travelling to McKinlay.

"The area around Julia Creek and McKinlay had 200 to 250 millimetres dumped on it. Some of the locals are saying it's the worst flooding they've ever seen," Senior Sergeant Craig Shepherd told the North Queensland Register.

At Easter Creek, the water was 2.5m over the Flinders Highway. At the Landsborough Highway, the water was not dropping, and at the McKinlay River, the waters rose to 1m over the bridge.

Crews were alerted to a medical emergency on a property cut off by floodwaters north of Longreach on January 31.

The RACQ NQ Rescue Helicopter was flown in to airlift an elderly man to Winton Hospital. The helicopter run by CEO Alex Dorr and crew is operated by Heliwest, based in Mt Isa.

Mid last week, the Bureau of Meteorology issued flood warnings for the Thomson, Barcoo, Flinders, Bulloo, Gilbert and MacIntyre rivers, as well as Cooper Creek and the Georgina and Diamantina catchments.
